Ice-breakers are powering their way towards about 50 vessels, including several passenger ferries, stuck solid in the iced-over Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland.Thousands of passengers in the ferries run by Viking Line, Anedin Lines and Tallink have been offered free food and alcohol while awaiting rescue.
“This is the worst ice cover we have seen since 1996,” said Johnny Lindvall, head of the ice-breaking unit at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
Sharp northerly winds have dramatically raised the chill factor in what is already a very cold winter, even by Scandinavian standards.
